Teleworking during the 2024 Olympics: how to prepare?
February 21, 2024
During the Paris 2024 Games, more than 10 million spectators are expected. Hosting this exceptional event will have impacts on transport, in certain places and at certain times, on the road and in public transport. For certain employers and their employees, teleworking can therefore represent an interesting solution in order to avoid the busiest periods and locations. If your situation allows it, here are several good reasons to temporarily adapt your routine as well as tips to prepare for it with complete peace of mind.
Olympic Games: July 26 to August 11. The first competitions begin on July 24.
Paralympic Games: from August 28 to September 8.
The job market in Île-de-France is particularly compatible with teleworking: more than 60% of employees work in the commercial tertiary sector.
Find out more on the INSEE websiteWhat are the professions where teleworking is possible?
Teleworking is generally possible in professions in the tertiary sector and more generally in all administrative or office activities. Some examples :
- Communication and advertising;
- Online commerce/web design;
- Management and project management;
- Consulting;
- Human ressources ;
- IT-related professions;
- Secretariat;
- Financial and banking services;
- Editing and writing;
- etc.
These activities benefit from the flexibility offered by online communication tools and dematerialized project management.
More and more workers are choosing teleworking
45% of workers in France telework regularly with 2,1 teleworking days per week in 2023.
Naturally, teleworking is not suitable for all situations, this is particularly the case for professions requiring direct interaction with the public or a physical presence on site.
These workers must travel to their workplace to complete their tasks, whether to treat patients, operate factories, build infrastructure, serve customers or manage hospitality establishments. Other adaptation solutions can then be developed, such as carpooling, cycling or arranging working hours when possible, with the aim of avoiding busy periods and places.
Ideas to qualify about teleworking (and its little-known advantages)
There are many prejudices surrounding teleworking: reduced productivity, social isolation, damage to corporate culture, etc. In reality, field experience and studies show that teleworking, when well supervised, presents disadvantages. concrete benefits for companies and employees.
Please note: an employer cannot require remote working if the employee cannot or does not want to for personal reasons.
Is teleworking synonymous with isolation?
Teleworking does not necessarily mean staying at home! Many workers use other company sites, branch sites of that company, coworking spaces or cafes to telecommute. It’s an opportunity to meet other employees or meet up with neighboring colleagues, to discover other sectors of activity… There are many spaces in Paris and Ile-de-France to work in complete peace of mind:
- coworking spaces;
- business centers;
- telecenters;
- digital manufacturing workshops or shared workshops;
- cafes;
- etc.
Is teleworking compulsory during the Games?
Teleworking is a practice that depends on the days, places and professional and individual situations. The government encourages those who can (employees and employers) to set up teleworking during the Games, but this mode of operation remains optional and free for everyone. The objective is not to force you to stay at home, but to limit travel to the busiest stations/sections of lines to increase your comfort and peace of mind.
Teleworking is therefore one solution among others, which can be combined with other alternatives: for example, you can telework 1 day of the week and adapt your route or your mode of transport (carpooling, cycling, etc.) on the other days .
Advice per site and per day will be published in the spring to find the most suitable solutions for you.
Did you know ? 20% less attendance at peak times, thanks to teleworking
A 2024 study carried out by the Paris Region Institute shows that teleworking makes it possible to reduce public transport use during peak hours. On Friday mornings, for example, we observe an 18% to 20% drop in attendance, compared to Tuesday mornings. The roads most used for commuting are also less busy on Friday than on Tuesday.
Find out more on the Institut Paris Région websiteDoes teleworking lower productivity?
Teleworking often raises concerns regarding productivity. Physical distance would be detrimental to coordination and communication between teams, which are sometimes necessary for the successful completion of a task. In reality, the impact of teleworking on productivity depends mainly on how it is implemented.
Several factors can explain better productivity when teleworking:
- reduction in travel time (on average of 45 minutes in Île-de-France);
- the increased flexibility of employees to organize their workspace and more easily reconcile professional and personal life;
- reducing the rate of absenteeism.

You are an employee
