Activation of the Olympic and Paralympic routes on July 15: what changes for your road trips
Posted on 11 July 2024
Updated August 20, 2024
From July 15 to September 11, when you take the highway or the Paris ring road, you will notice the presence of lanes reserved for athletes and Paris 2024 accredited vehicles. These are the “Olympic and Paralympic reserved lanes” (also called “VROP” or “reserved lanes”). What impact is expected on your travel? How can we best anticipate it?
What vehicles are allowed on the Olympic and Paralympic routes?
The following vehicles are authorized to use the reserved lanes:
- vehicles of people accredited by Paris 2024;
- public transport vehicles;
- taxis ;
- vehicles intended to promote the transport of people with reduced mobility (PAM vehicle for example);
- and emergency and security vehicles;
- the vehicles of the following healthcare professionals, for the exclusive needs of this mission and on condition of using special category B light devices and warning devices:
- vehicles for transporting blood products and human organs;
- medical transport vehicles intervening after medical regulation by the Urgent Medical Aid Service (SAMU);
- vehicles of doctors participating in the departmental guard;
- Paris Medical Emergency vehicles participating in ongoing care;
- land medical transport vehicles ensuring the transfer of patients between hospitals and equipped with specific signage approved between the Police Prefecture and the Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris.
If you are one of the authorized vehicles, no QR code is required to use these reserved lanes, but checks will be carried out by the police. Any unauthorized vehicle on these reserved lanes risks a fine of €135.
Bicycles and scooters are not allowed to circulate there.
In order to ensure the greatest safety for motorized two-wheelers and three-wheelers, Interfile Circulation (CIF) has been interrupted on roads with JOP reserved lanes.
Indeed, with the Olympic and Paralympic Games, traffic is likely to be very dense and there will be a lot of traffic jams by high-capacity vehicles on the 185 km of lanes reserved for vehicles accredited to transport athletes, official delegations, emergency and security vehicles, taxis, ambulances and public transport (operating as part of a public service mission) and accredited journalists.
I am Paris 2024 accredited, can I take the Olympic routes?
Please note, to travel on these reserved lanes, your vehicle must be Paris 2024 accredited. If this is not the case, you cannot use these lanes. Please contact the organizer for more information.
Where are the Olympic and Paralympic routes located?
From July 15 and no later than September 11, the following lanes will be impacted by the presence of an Olympic lane reserved for accredited vehicles:
- A1 (from July 15 to September 11): between Roissy Charles de Gaulle and Porte de la Chapelle
- A4 (from July 15 to August 13, then from August 30 to September 8): between Collégien and Porte de Bercy
- A12 (from July 15 to August 13, then from August 27 to September 8): between Rocquencourt and Montigny le Bretonneux
- A13 (from July 15 to August 13, then from August 27 to September 8): between Saint-Cloud and Rocquencourt
- RN13 (from July 15 to August 13, then from August 27 to September 8): between Porte Maillot and La Défense
- The ring road (from July 15 to August 13, then from August 22 to September 11): from Porte de Sèvres to Porte de Bercy
- the Porte Maillot exits indoors and Bois de Boulogne exits outdoors are exclusively dedicated to reserved lanes and are therefore prohibited for unauthorized users.
- The circular boulevard of La Défense (from July 15 to August 13, then from August 22 to September 11)
- A86 : between the Pleyel interchange and avenue du Stade de France
- A104 : between Collégien and Saint-Thibault-des-Vignes
- Some intramural Parisian axes
View the Olympic and Paralympic reserved lanes on the interactive map (“Roads” tab). Please note, the card does not take into account the deactivation periods between the two Olympics.
(Details of routes by municipality, road axis or section available on Decree No. 2022-786 of May 4, 2022).
The Olympic and Paralympic lane generally occupies the leftmost or rightmost lane on the road axis. Please note that the speed on the axes affected by a reserved lane (RN13, A1, A4, A12 and A13) will be lowered for the duration of their activation: sections at 110km/h will be reduced to 90km/h.
Good to know: do not confuse “Olympic and Paralympic routes” and “Olympic routes”
● The Olympic and Paralympic lane is a reserved lane on a road axis and is subject to specific signage, the other lanes are accessible to all users,
● The Olympic route is a route accessible to all users and is not subject to any signage. However, these routes will be used by accredited participants to reach the competition sites.
On the interactive map, the Olympic and Paralympic routes appear in purple, and the Olympic routes in pink.
How to identify an Olympic and Paralympic path?
Specific road signs will be visible from July 1, and until September 11, on the routes concerned.
The ground markings and the signs give you 2 pieces of information:
- on which lane is the reserved lane located
- the days on which it will be activated
The reserved lane is activated 24 hours a day. So observe your surroundings carefully when you ride.
